Part One: A Strange Shape in the Ground

Every Friday afternoon, Omar and Layla play in the city park near their school. They like to run near the old oak tree at the corner, close to the small pond. But this Friday was different from all the others.

The sky was grey, and the wind was cold. Layla stopped running and looked down at the ground.

“Look at that,” Layla said. She pointed at the dirt near the tree roots. “There’s something under the tree.”

Omar walked closer, careful not to step on it. He saw a small piece of wood sticking out of the dirt. It looked old and dirty.

“What is it?” Omar asked. He felt curious immediately, and he knelt down for a better look.

“I don’t know,” Layla said. “But it looks like a box. Maybe someone buried it here a long time ago.”

Omar touched the wood carefully with one finger. “This box is older than my grandfather’s watch,” he said with a smile.

“We have to dig it out,” Layla said. “I really want to know what’s inside.”

“Me too,” Omar said. “This is the most interesting thing I have ever found in this park.”

Omar looked up at the sky. Dark clouds were moving in fast. “It looks like it will rain soon,” he said. “If it rains, the ground will get too soft and messy.”

“Then let’s hurry,” Layla said. “We can dig now, before the rain starts.”

Part Two: Digging in the Rain

Omar and Layla found two strong sticks near the tree. They began to dig carefully around the box, one small handful of dirt at a time. The ground was hard at first, but slowly, the box became easier to see.

Suddenly, a few drops of rain fell on their hands. Then more drops came, faster and faster, until the whole park felt wet and grey.

“It’s raining!” Omar said. “We need to hurry, or the box will get wet inside too.”

They dug faster. Layla’s hands were cold and shaking, but she did not stop for a second. Omar was digging too, and his shirt was getting wet from the rain.

“I can see the top of the box now!” Layla shouted. She was excited and worried at the same time. What if the box was empty? What if it was broken inside?

Finally, after a few more minutes, they pulled the small wooden box out of the wet ground. It was heavier than they expected, and it had a small metal lock on the front.

Just then, an old man walked toward them, holding a large umbrella. He worked at the park, cleaning the paths every single day.

“What do you have there?” the man asked kindly, looking down at the muddy box.

“We found a box under the old tree,” Omar explained, still breathing fast from digging. “We don’t know what’s inside, but we are very curious.”

“My name is Saeed,” the man said, still smiling. “I remember that tree well. Many years ago, some children in this park buried a special box under it. It was a secret between them, and nobody ever came back for it.”

“Can you help us open it?” Layla asked. “The lock looks old, but maybe it still works.”

Part Three: The Secret Inside

They all walked under a small roof near the park entrance, away from the heavy rain. Omar wiped the box with his sleeve, and then he slowly opened the old lock.

Inside, there were several old photographs, a folded letter, and a small silver key. Layla picked up the letter carefully and opened it with both hands.

“It says: ‘To the person who finds this box, we hope you are happy and safe. This is our secret from many years ago. Take care of it,'” Layla read aloud, her voice quiet with wonder.

Omar looked closely at the old photographs. They showed children playing in the same park, many years before, standing under the very same tree.

“This is amazing,” Omar said. “We discovered a real secret from the past, and now it belongs to us too.”

Mr. Saeed nodded slowly. “Now it’s your secret too,” he said. “Maybe one day, you will bury something new for other children to find, many years from now.”

Layla smiled at Omar. “That’s a wonderful idea,” she said. “We will make our own box, and we will hide it under this same tree before we grow up.”

“I will bring something special from home,” Omar said. “Something that shows who we are today.”

The rain stopped, and the sun slowly came out again. Omar and Layla said goodbye to Mr. Saeed and walked home together, happy and full of new ideas.

That night, Omar could not stop thinking about the box, the letter, and the old photographs. He knew that this rainy Friday was a day he would never forget.
