The Hidden Cost of Multitasking

A1Mystery

Switching between tasks feels productive, but research shows it often slows you down rather than speeding you up.

Every time you shift focus, your brain needs a moment to adjust, a phenomenon researchers call “switching cost.” These small delays add up, making multitasking less efficient than it feels in the moment. Worse, it often leads to more mistakes, since your attention is never fully on one thing.

Single-tasking, by contrast, allows your brain to fully engage with one problem at a time. Many people find they complete work faster and with fewer errors when they resist the urge to check messages or jump between browser tabs.

Setting aside blocks of uninterrupted time, even just twenty-five minutes, can make a noticeable difference. The next time you feel busy but unproductive, it might be worth asking whether multitasking is actually the problem.

“Spill the beans” means to reveal a secret.
