The Cave of Two Rivers
📖 Graded Story

Reem and Karim join a guided tour through the famous underground caves outside their town, excited to see the underground waterfall everyone talks about. Halfway through the tour, distant thunder rumbles somewhere far above them. Their guide’s expression changes instantly, and suddenly, sightseeing is the last thing on anyone’s mind.

Quick Answer: When thunder rumbles above the caves, the guide realizes rising floodwater could trap the group, and they must climb through a narrow secret passage to escape safely.

Part 1: Into the Cave

Reem had wanted to visit the Two Rivers Caves for years, ever since her older cousin had described the hidden underground waterfall in breathless, excited detail. When her friend Karim finally suggested they book a guided tour together, she said yes before he’d even finished asking.

Their guide, a weathered, cheerful man named Uncle Faisal, had been leading tours through these caves for almost twenty years. “Stay close, and don’t touch the formations,” he told the small group at the entrance, his voice echoing slightly off the stone walls. “Some of these took thousands of years to grow. A careless hand can undo that in one second.”

The cave system was breathtaking, tall ceilings dripping with pale stone formations, narrow passages opening suddenly into wide chambers, the air cool and slightly damp against their skin. Reem’s flashlight caught the walls at just the right angle, and for a moment, the entire chamber seemed to sparkle faintly, like something out of a dream.

“How much further to the waterfall?” Karim asked, his excitement clearly building with every step deeper into the cave.

“Not far now,” Faisal said, checking his watch briefly. “Maybe fifteen more minutes.”

Part 2: The Sound of Thunder

They reached the underground waterfall exactly as promised, a genuinely stunning sight, water cascading down smooth dark rock into a pool that glowed faintly blue under their flashlights.

Reem was still admiring it, snapping photos on her phone, when a low, distant rumble echoed faintly through the passage behind them, barely audible over the sound of falling water.

Faisal went very still, his cheerful expression disappearing completely. “Was that thunder?” he asked sharply, looking toward the narrow tunnel they’d come through.

“I think so,” Karim said, confused by the sudden shift in the guide’s tone. “Is that a problem? We’re underground.”

“These caves connect to the river system above us,” Faisal explained quickly, already gathering the small group together. “Heavy rain up top means rising water down here, sometimes within minutes. We need to start moving back toward the entrance right now.”

The group moved quickly through the passages they’d just explored, the earlier sense of wonder replaced by a much more urgent focus. Reem’s heart began pounding as she noticed something she hadn’t paid attention to on the way in: a thin trickle of water was already creeping across the tunnel floor ahead of them, where none had been before.

Part 3: The Rising Water

By the time they reached the main chamber, the thin trickle of water had become a genuine, steady stream, ankle-deep and rising visibly even as they watched.

“The main entrance passage floods first, and floods worst,” Faisal said, his voice tight but controlled. “If we try to go back that way now, we risk getting caught in a much stronger current further along.”

“So what do we do?” Reem asked, trying hard to keep the fear out of her own voice.

Faisal pointed his flashlight toward a narrow opening high on one wall of the chamber, barely wide enough for a person to fit through. “There’s a smaller passage up there,” he said. “It connects to a higher exit, one tourists don’t normally use because it’s tight and unpleasant. But it stays dry even when the main passage floods.”

The group waded quickly toward the higher opening, water now reaching their knees, cold and disorienting in the darkness. One by one, they climbed up toward the narrow gap, Faisal helping each person carefully, checking that everyone’s footing was secure before letting them continue.

Karim, usually confident and easygoing, hesitated at the base of the climb, staring up at the narrow black opening with obvious fear. “I don’t do well in tight spaces,” he admitted quietly, his voice shaking slightly.

Part 4: The Narrow Way Up

Reem climbed up beside him immediately. “Look at me, not the opening,” she said firmly, echoing something her own father had told her once during a nervous moment. “One movement at a time. I’ll be right in front of you the whole way.”

Karim nodded, jaw tight, and began climbing carefully behind her, his breathing audibly unsteady in the tight, echoing space. The passage was indeed narrow, barely wide enough for their shoulders in places, cold stone pressing close on every side, the sound of rushing water growing fainter behind them with every careful movement forward.

“You’re doing great,” Reem called back over her shoulder, though her own heart was pounding just as hard. “Almost there, I think.”

After what felt like a much longer climb than it probably actually was, the passage finally widened, and pale daylight appeared ahead, filtering down from an opening in the hillside above. One by one, the group emerged, blinking and soaked, into fresh air and steady rain, the storm above finally explaining everything that had happened below.

Karim sat down heavily on a wet rock, laughing shakily with obvious relief. “I have never been more scared in my life,” he said. “Also, weirdly, I think that might have been the best day of my life too.”

Faisal counted the group carefully, making sure everyone had made it out safely, before finally allowing himself a relieved smile. “That’s why I always check the weather before every single tour,” he said. “Today, the weather didn’t cooperate quite as well as I’d have liked.”

Reem looked back at the hillside, rain still falling steadily around them, thinking about the beautiful blue waterfall now completely cut off underground, and about the strange, unexpected courage she’d found in that narrow, frightening passage.

“Same time next month?” she asked Karim, grinning despite everything.

“Absolutely not,” Karim said immediately. Then, after a pause, added, “Maybe. Ask me again once I’ve stopped shaking.”
