Part 1: The Surprise
Huda visited her grandmother every weekend, and lately, the visits had felt a little sad. Grandma had hurt her knee two months earlier, and her once-beautiful garden had slowly filled with weeds, the flowers she loved so much left completely untended.
This Saturday morning, though, something was different.
“Grandma, look!” Huda called out, staring at the garden in amazement. The weeds were gone. Fresh flowers bloomed brightly along the fence, and the soil looked freshly turned and watered.
Grandma came outside slowly, leaning on her cane, her eyes widening with surprise. “I didn’t do this,” she said. “I haven’t been able to work in the garden in weeks.”
“Then who did?” Huda asked, looking around curiously.
“I have no idea,” Grandma said, smiling despite her confusion. “But whoever it is, they clearly know what they’re doing.”
Part 2: Watching and Waiting
“I’m going to find out,” Huda said determinedly. “Someone is coming here secretly, and I want to know who.”
That evening, Huda sat quietly by the window, watching the garden as darkness fell. She waited for nearly two hours, her eyes growing heavy, until finally, just as she was about to give up, she noticed movement near the fence.
A shadowy figure moved carefully through the garden, kneeling beside the flower beds, working quietly in the moonlight.
Huda crept outside as quietly as she could, staying hidden behind a large bush, trying to get a better look at the mysterious gardener.
The figure stood up slowly, and moonlight fell across a familiar, wrinkled face.
Part 3: The Secret Gardener
“Mr. Aziz?” Huda said in surprise, stepping out from behind the bush.
Their elderly neighbor jumped slightly, clearly startled. “Oh! Huda. I didn’t realize anyone was watching,” he said, looking a little embarrassed.
“You’ve been fixing Grandma’s garden?” Huda asked. “Every night?”
Mr. Aziz nodded, brushing dirt from his hands. “Your grandmother helped me plant my own garden years ago, back when my wife was still alive,” he said. “When I heard about her knee, I wanted to help, but I know she’s proud. I thought she might refuse if I offered directly, so I decided to just quietly do it instead.”
Huda smiled warmly. “She’s going to be so happy when she finds out it’s you,” she said.
“Please,” Mr. Aziz said quickly. “Let her keep enjoying the mystery a little longer. It makes me happy too, honestly, doing something kind without needing any thanks for it.”
The next morning, Huda told her grandmother everything anyway, unable to keep such a lovely secret entirely to herself. Grandma’s eyes filled with happy tears.
“That kind old man,” she said softly, looking out at her beautiful garden. “I should go thank him properly.”
“He asked me not to tell you,” Huda admitted. “But I thought you’d want to know.”
Grandma laughed, wiping her eyes. “Some mysteries,” she said, “are even better once they’re solved.”
That afternoon, Grandma baked a batch of cookies and walked slowly next door, leaning on her cane, to properly thank her secret gardener in person.
